“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them and they follow Me.” (John 10:27, NKJV)
God still speaks. The Bible teaches us that God has spoken to His people since the beginning. When Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden, God dwelled in their midst and communed with them. He continued to speak to His people throughout the Bible, He spoke to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, the prophets, His disciples, and of course, to His Son, Jesus Christ.
In a study of the Old and New Testament we see that God used a variety of means to speak and to reveal Himself. He spoke through visions (Gen. 15:1), a burning bush (Ex. 3:2), miraculous signs (Ex. 8:20-25), a trumpet (Ex. 19:16-19), a donkey (Num. 22:28), a fleece (Judg. 6:36), a fire (1 Kings 18:37-39), a still small voice (1 Kings 19:12), dreams (Job 33:14-18)(Matt 2:12-13), the written Word (Psalm 119:105), writing on the wall (Dan. 5:5), preaching (Jonah 3:4), angels (Luke 1:26), the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:2, Rom. 8:16), prophets (Acts 21:10-11), and His Son Jesus Christ (Heb. 1:2).
In a casual reading of the Gospels, we see that Jesus easily interacted with people. He used different opportunities to share, comfort and reveal new truths to His followers and bystanders. We see that He spoke in the mornings, at night, during meal times, in crowds, on boats, in the homes of people and through miracles etc. Jesus met with people in their different life circumstances and transformed their everyday experiences into times of teaching. He spoke to ordinary, everyday normal Christian people throughout the ages and Church history.
What is important is not the way in which God speaks but that He speaks. It is clear that whenever God spoke, the person knew that it was God speaking to them, they understood what He said and they knew they had to respond to Him. Usually our problem is not in knowing what God is saying, but rather in cultivating a quiet heart so that we can hear Him speak. We also struggle to willingly obey what we know He is saying to us. He is still speaking today. And He will speak to us too. Can you hear Him speak? Will you quiet your heart to hear Him speak? What is God saying to you?
